“and I said to my body, softly, “I want to be your friend. ” It took a long breath and replied, “I have been waiting my whole life for this.”
Traumatic experiences come in many forms. It may be the trauma of a life-threatening experience, such as war, physical or sexual assault, childhood abuse, a serious accident, death of a loved one, victim of natural disaster or witnessing a violent crime.
“Trauma causes the body to be frozen in a state of fear, terror, and hypervigilance,” says Dr. Bessel A. van der Kolk, a clinical psychiatrist and founder of the Trauma Center in Brookline, Massachusetts and a leader in the field of post-traumatic stress. “So fundamentally, the effect of trauma is in relationship to one’s body. One’s body gives the signal that it’s not safe, and your body keeps fighting an existing enemy.”
Traumatic experiences often get relived over and over again. Our bodies go into “fight or flight” mode, and we can get stuck in this pattern. Trauma Touch Therapy™ can help our bodies learn to trust again, to feel safe.
My work with clients suffering from the effects of trauma is about making sure they know they are always in charge of the session. I aim to create a safe environment, foremost. I will meet you where you are at, and we’ll go as slow as necessary to allow healing to take place. Communication between us is a priority. Trauma Touch Therapy™ usually involves a series of 10 sessions, each lasting approximately one hour. During that time we will work together to explore sensations in your body, movement, breath and touch. Touch is only involved if the client gives permission, and almost always will be done fully clothed whether it be standing, while seated or on a table. I will also teach you body centered mindfulness skills to give you the tools to self regulate on your own.
Benefits include-reinforces psychotherapy, reduces addictive behaviors, eases muscle tension, improves the ability to relax and improves sleep, reduces physical pain and symptoms, greater sense of boundaries, enhances the ability to experience pleasure and improves the capacity for intimacy.
